March 17, 2018, 12:36 pm | By Miss. Jemimah Yusuf
Advancing the kingdom forward is our outmost desire. We are aimed at seeing the gospel reach to every part of the earth; this is our mission. To that effect, the shalom network had another insightful chat with one of North's amazing artists sir Jakes. We are privileged to have you here
It's great to be here Jemimah. Thank you for having me.
So can you tell us a bit about you? Background?
Okay, you know I believe... my name is Jacob Obed Hinjari, with stage name Jakes Hinjari... a singer, songwriter and music producer. 🙂 I hail from Adamawa state, Nigeria. I am from a family of 6.. that's two parents, four children. I am the third of the four, with a younger sister... The only lady, growing into a fine young woman. 🙂
Okay 🙂. So how has growing up been?
I was born in Kaduna, spent the first 10years of my life there then moved to Mubi/Yola Adamawa state... Not until when I returned for my university education in Zaria. That's sometimes in 2010. 🙂 Still in Zaria, currently running my masters degree programme in Architecture.
Nice .. But doesn't seem you gonna take up the profession as a career right since you're fully into music?
Well, evidently right? 😁
But not necessarily. I have plans for Architecture... but not heavily immediately. However I can still run smaller projects by the side. Thank God it's a professional course. laughs
Hehe alright... So can you walk us through your musical journey, how it all started...
Well... I wouldn't say I can exactly place it. I grew up around music generally. Even before I decided to be actively involved, I always had a keen ear for music. You could say my ears are my greatest gift. 🙂 I first recorded a song as a member of a boy band during my senior secondary school. Even though I had written songs since from around 12years of age... I still am proud of those songs.laughs But active solo involvement in the music industry started around 2013 as a producer, and 2015 as an singer with the release of my debut single, "A light". Basically there are many beginnings... it depends on what exactly we are talking about. laughsImpressive
Thank you! 🙂
Are those songs still available ? And are you gonna record them? Would love to hear them really
You mean the songs from way back when I was 12 years old?
Well... if I remember them well, maybe in the future. But not now. Hehehe. This does not mean I'm not proud of them... It's not just yet time.
So can you tell us about the worship ministry? the worshipper you are and known for.. Where does it all fall in?
about the worship ministry; Just to be clear, ministry is service... minister actually means servant. So worship ministry for is service in the area of worship. What is this service? In the body of Christ, on the premise of my gifts and grace, I can best contribute as a worship leader...being that we use music as a major tool for worship. Though without this understanding yet, I first joined church band in 2003/2004. I fully gained understanding almost a decade later, and this was marked by auditioning and subsequently being picked for the Koinonia worship team of Eternity Network International (ENI, a ministry headed by Apostle Joshua Selman) membership that's in early 2014. That was a major kick off for me into actual ministry. I henceforth realised my assignment to the body was beyond music, but to lead the Body in every capacity to meet God and be transformed by His presence. 🙂
Interviewer:Wowwww! That's a clearer definition of ministry..
So technically, it has always been a ministry (service to the Body and God) concurrently with the pursuit of a career in music
Was that what kick started the worshippers' cycle?
Yes, you could say that... but Worshippers' Circle is a much more unique vision... of course in line with the ministry aspect of my music. The Worshippers' Circle Vision came as a result of a search for a means to put out songs of praise and worship that I had been receiving. It started as that... but as I planned out everything, it became bigger. I had always sought a time of worship where all our focus was to worship God, no distractions or break of transmission. And God gave me the Worshippers' Circle Vision as one way we could address that. So basically, at Worshippers' Circle, we get to meet God through extensive praise and worship, and also go home with new songs (songs I've recieved) to continue worship with. Basically. 🙂
Interviwer:Amazing ,really amazing. I haven't been to any, but have heard testimonials, and they're just trilling. Its key having a vision, God always backs it up
Yeah. Has really been amazing moments of God's presence. He always shows up through the songs and addresses diverse issues uniquely for people. Truly has been amazing and humbling. I find it a great honour and privilege to have been blessed with such a call.
You should plan to be at the next one too. 🙂
Interviewer:I definitely will
So what has been your motivating factor?
What pushes you?
Well, God. My love for Him as I grow to know Him and His purposes more everyday... then obviously, my love for music... I feel that one is "follow come" hehehe. 🙂
Interviewer:Hahaha .. Oh Lord! Haha
So how do you balance with school, music, productions, and other aspects?
Hmm. Trust me it's tough... really tough. Especially because I am much more passionate about music than architecture. The music part is never a challenge, but anytime I have to do school work, it's always a challenge. Of course God has been faithful and sustains me. I know that it is entirely His grace that sustains me. It is clear that it is not an equal balance and I need support in the academic side. His grace makes it possible... and by that grace, I'll round up finally in a couple of months from now. Finally! Wheww! 🙂
In all these areas that you're in to, who do you mentor after?
sighsIt's quite complex too...
In the worship ministry, largely Jesus Culture, Bethel Music and Travis Greene. In music generally, largely Mali Music... then Lecrae. That's because they love God and want to influence the world for a positive cause through music. That's through inspirational music (I do inspirational music too. I want to inspire the world to live in love the way God wants it.)
As a music producer, Cobhams Asuquo and Mastercraft. As an Architect... well, non! Hehehe... I'm still trying to find one (due to sheer lack of passion, God help me.) So there you go... I know I am the first person like this you've met. Hehehe. Don't mind me... is only God that can sustain this type of man you are seeing here. Hehehe.🙂
Interviewer:Hahaha .. But you're doing pretty well in them
Yeah. By the grace of God.
Interviewer:Your passion is contagious, except for your profession though haha
I'm working on that. But eventually like I said... eventually. 🙂
What do you see yourself achieving through your gifting?
Wow. I would say, generally as a believer in the cause of God's kingdom, I want my gifting to be a means through which God and the mindset of God reaches a dying world. So, outside of the purposes of God, I truly see no essence of even using my gifts. He defines my everything. 🙂
Interviewer:Wow. I'm not gonna forget that in a hurry. Really deep
Wow... should I say thank you.?🙈
Interviewer:Haha you're a funny being ..haha
What would be your advice to others who look up to you and other artists?
Well... it's okay to look up to others, but your motivation to pursue your cause should not be tied to any man. Mentor after people, but find your sense of purpose from within (the God that lives in you) and what God says or has said to you. People fail, but God never fails. Also I encourage that as believers you take advantage of the Grace of God that is available to you and make the most of it. His grace allows that we can out do the unbeliever. This coupled with hard work and excellence, then the skies would be your starting point. And if you've not genuinely received Jesus as your lord and saviour, do so! That is the only way to enjoy the benefits of serving Him.🙂
Interviewer:True.. Awesome .. So awesome
Thank you ma'am.
Interviewer:Thanks so so much for sharing with us..
Feels to good to be able to relate some of these things to someone else for a change.
Interviewer:Yea I know right 😁
Thanks a lot
It's my pleasure... I would do it many times over.
Interviewer:God bless you immensely and bless your gifts
We celebrate you We love you
Amen... Thank you so much.
